EAST GLAMORGAN CHESS ASSOCIATION

The Pre AGM committee meeting of the Association took place at Nolton Hall, Merthyrmawr Road N, Bridgend, home of the Bridgend Chess Club on Tuesday 13th June 2023, starting at 7:30pm

Present: Anthony Baker, Bill Harle, Phil Jones, Martin Ricketts, Moira MacDonald, Laetitia Davies, David Robinson, Rob Frame

AGENDA

1 Apologies for absence

Roy Thomas, Kevin Staveley, John Thornton, Anthony Williams

2. Minutes of last meeting.

Were accepted as a true copy.

3. Matters arising.

Phil Jones advised that as requested a survey was undertaken to establish whether an earlier start time for matches is possible.  However there was an overwhelming majority in favour of staying at 7.30

4. Preliminary report from the treasurer.

Draft accounts were presented. Without charging the egca fees this  year we have made a loss of £480.51 although this still leaves us with an unnecessarily large reserve of £4,705.65.  There remain some bills outstanding totalling  less than £200. The treasurer has proposed that the egca subscription be waived for 2023-24.  It is believed that the WCU fees will also be unchanged.  Membership is slightly down on the pre-pandemic figures but we currently have a substantial number of new members.

5. Preliminary report by the Ex.D.

Nelson is the only club not to default a board. There have been far less postponements than normal which is a good thing.

The major issue surrounds rating.  I have become aware that some matches or part matches have not been updated to the ratings site.  Where I have become aware of this I have tried repeatedly to get the site updated.  This brings into focus the lack of an EGCA member acting as our Ratings Officer.  Please check with your members to see if there is an EGCA member who is willing to do this role.

I am aware that some clubs may decide to enter more teams next season.  This will invariably mean the divisions will need some tinkering not simply promoting and relegating 2 teams.  In division 3 in particular there may need to be more than 2 teams promoted and perhaps only 1 team relegated from divisions 1 and 2.

6. Preliminary report from the secretary.

N/A as position vacant

    7. Proposed changes to the EG Rules of Play

    1. To replace the KO Cup with a Quickplay League.
    • The time limit is all moves in 10 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move.
    • There will be 4 games per round – with no rotation of players.
    • Each game will see colours reversed.
    • The home team will have black in the first game.
    • The games will not be rated.
    • Team captains will arrange players in order of playing strength.  A tolerance of 100 points will be allowed for all players, based on the January EG published rating list.
    • Results to be mailed to the Ex.Dir within 7 days
    • Any postponed games must be played within 14 days
    • The league will be decided on game points with match points used as a tie break
    • A trophy will be presented to the winning team

8. Proposed changes to the EG Constitution.

Change the date for the Pre AGM from May to May or June

9. A.O.B.
